My name is John Verity I am 17 years old. I left York College this year where I had been studying the NVQ level 2 plumbing course when I realised that full time classroom based learning is not for me. I am currently working at Clinton Cards part time where I have been for approximately 6 months; I am also working with two landscape gardeners when I am not working there. I do not want to switch to a full time role at Clinton Cards because I believe I am capable of a more challenging, more demanding role where I can use my strengths and capabilities to progress. I believe I have good communication skills, and am very strong and I am enjoying working within the construction industry. I can work in a team and am able to work independently; I am enthusiastic, motivated, reliable and punctual. I have also passed 3 interviews to work at CPP, but I have now realised I would suit working in a more hands on environment.
CAREER AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Clinton Cards, Monks Cross shopping park
April 2009 – Present
I work part time at Clinton Cards which I took when I was looking for a job after leaving college. Although it is part time work, I still work between the hours with a Landscape Gardener. I work in the stock room and on the shop floor, dealing with customers and cash handling.
Guy Wilkinson, Landscape Gardener
November 08 - Present
His friend Mark Bell who was pleased with my work as a labourer recommended me to Guy. I watched him turfing, paving, block paving, crazy paving and fencing and I therefore have a brief insight unto these skillsunderstanding. My duties however were more lifting, mixing and skip work.
Geoff Tymon, Landscape Gardener
June 09 – Present
My boss at Clinton Cards heard about my job in landscaping and asked me if I would like to do some work for her husband who is a well established Landscape Gardener and with him I developed my understanding of the profession where I did more paving, mixing, helping to erect monolith water features and pergolas.
York College
I went to York College doing a plumbing level 2 course; I was hoping for an apprenticeship but unfortunately I didn’t find one and therefore did the full time course. I covered 37 modules, 13 of which where health and safety, which I later passed a test in. I also passed tests in key plumbing principles, common plumbing processes and cold water systems. I left after completing my cold water systems module as I realised full time classroom based learning wasn’t for me; I hoped then to find a job within the construction industry. College gave me an understanding of many key aspects of construction such as working with power tools, hand tools, ladders, mobile scaffolds, LPG equipment; how to deal with hazardous materials such as asbestos, solvents and sheet lead, as well as fire fighting.
Pizza Hut, Monks Cross Shopping Park
August 2008 – May 2009
I used to work part time at Pizza Hut where I prepared pizzas, dough and I presented both starters and pizzas. I had to make sure the pizzas were promptly out of the oven to be served hot and to a high standard. I was also in charge of making the starters and believed this responsibility was important as I needed to be able to remember what each starter consisted of and produce them in a short space of time and to a high standard. I also had to follow health and safety regulations and clean the kitchen to the guidelines given.
Reason for leaving: My hours were at a minimum and my hours clashed with Clinton Cards
London’s Newsagents. Heworth, York
July 2006-January 2009
I delivered newspapers on a Sunday morning. I was one of the first people to be asked to come in and fill in for other people if they where away. I organised myself to know what days I was doing which round.
Reason for leaving: I believe I was too old for a paper round!
Mark Bell, Builder
September 08 & October 08
I did some labouring work for Mark during the months of September and October, I did basic jobs such as mixing sand and cement, and using a wheel barrow to help him work quickly. He was pleased with my work and put me in touch with his friend Guy Wilkinson who was able to give me some flexible hours.
Hopgrove PFA. Malton Road, York
July 2007 - December 2008
I worked part time at my local sports club making sure the front of house was well presented to members of the public. I also cleaned the changing areas and toilets and looked after the overall hygiene of the sports facility. I had the responsibility of opening up and locking the facility after sportsmen/women had left when at work and on occasions I took the cash for hire of the MUGA. The hours were flexible so I was initially able to fit them around my other jobs and education.
Reason for leaving: Lack of time due to college and Pizza Hut.
